Sports Management and Recreation
Mission Statement
To provide qualified students interested in the Sports Management & Recreation industry with superior academic experiences and career opportunities within those disciplines while preparing them for post-secondary education and future employment.
The Sports Management and Recreation program has been designed to simulate a college curriculum. Students take cornerstone courses their freshman and sophomore years which give them essential skills and an overview in the Sport Management and Recreation area through guest speakers, field trips, and the use of technology. Participation in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and R.O.P.E.S. leadership training helps magnet students enhance their skills in communication, problem solving, teamwork and computer technology.
Students then specialize with higher-level courses during their junior and senior years. This leads to eligibility for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program and a paid internship at a local business where students can apply the knowledge they learned in class in a real world environment. Students also volunteer at local elementary and middle schools through teaching Junior Achievement programs and specialized reading programs. This integration of curriculum prepares students for top universities while giving them experiences they can build on their whole lives.
Currently, Palm Beach County is taking advantage of its location and weather to increase the number of sporting events in South Florida. There are major and minor league baseball teams with a brand new spring training facility. Through internships and projects, the Sports Management and Recreation magnet students have many opportunities to apply the business knowledge they are learning in their classes while preparing for college.
Activities include:
- Management of our Annual Magnet Golf Tournament at PGA National Country Club.
- Paid executive internships at such places as Roger Dean Stadium, BallenIsles Country Club, PGA National Resort, and Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation
- Sporting Event management of Gator Jam, our holiday basketball tournament a P.B.G.H.S.Varsity baseball game at Roger Dean Stadium and Palm Beach County Sports Institute’s Youth Festival
- Field trips to such places as: New York City, Pro Player Stadium, and Roger Dean Stadium
- Volunteering at special events such as the Florida Special Olympics, the Lou Groza National Place Kicker Awards, and activities at local recreation departments
- Participation in Junior Achievement’s Building Achievement through Sports and Entertainment (B.A.S.E.) Program

These real life experiences prepare students for a future in the exciting sports industry.
