Pre-Medicine

Mission Statement

To provide qualified students interested in the medical industry with superior academic experiences and career opportunities within those disciplines while preparing them for post-secondary education and future employment.

Pre-Medicine Motto:

You leave PBGHS thinking like doctors.

Students in the Pre-Medicine Program follow an extensive four-year college preparatory program which emphasizes science and mathematics. This program prepares students to be highly competitive in the medical field at the university level of study. Students graduate with an Honors Allied Health Assisting Certificate from the Florida Department of Education.

This program emphasizes the following:

  • Courses that stress the development of communication skills, legal and ethical practice, and career skills performed by health professionals
  • A clinical preceptorship with hands-on contact with clients in chronic and acute care facilities such as the Palm Beach County Home, Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, and HCR Manor Care
  • Training by the American Lung Association in the “Students Teach Students Program” to provide awareness to hundreds of elementary students about the dangers of smoking
  • Volunteer training by Palm Beach County Hospice.
  • Field trips to Jupiter Eye Care Center, VA Hospital, Oakwood Center and HOSPICE
  • American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety, AED and HIV Peer Education Training
  • Other community service includes: Race for the Cure, Relay for Life, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Project Snowflake for the Palm Beach County Home, AND American Cancer Society Children’s Holiday Party

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is the student organization for the Pre-Med Magnet Program. Students have attended yearly national conferences in California, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, and Georgia. The Palm Beach Gardens High School’s HOSA Chapter earned 15 Top Ten national awards at the HOSA 2002 National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA in the following competitive events: Pathophysiology, Nutrition, Pharmacology, Dental Terminology, Dental Spelling, National Health Care Issues, and Biomedical Debate. Presently, Yeon Kim, a Pre-Medicine Magnet student won first in HOSA National Competition for Outstanding HOSA Chapter and is serving as President of HOSA Region IX.

With these academic, volunteer and clinical experiences, students are prepared for careers in the medical field.
