Application Process FAQs
Q: How many seats are available for students entering the magnet as sophomores?
A: It varies based on the number of seats vacated due to attrition. As this number is generally not known until final report cards in June, sophomore applicants may be waitlisted until the summer.
Q: How many freshmen are accepted into each magnet?
A: Global Business and Entrepreneurship: 50; Tourism, Hospitality, and Resort Management: 25; Sports Management and Recreation: 25; Pre-Medicine: 100; Television, Film, and Radio Production Technology: 50
Q: PBGHS is my home school. Does that give me an advantage?
A: Being in-district only becomes advantageous if the out-of-district maximum is reached for the school.
Q: My student is on a waitlist. What does that mean?
A: Waitlisted students are eligible for the magnet, but we believe all of the seats to be full. Waitlisted students will be accepted as vacancies are known. Vacancies are created when students fail to confirm their acceptance, move during the summer, or change their mind. As these events are unpredictable, there is no way of predicting when a student will be moved off of a waitlist.
Q: How do I find out where my student is on the waitlist?
A: A lottery is conducted each time waitlisted students are accepted; it is more of a wait pool than a list.
Q: My student has been accepted into a magnet at PBGHS but wants a different PBGHS magnet. Can she switch?
A: Sometimes. Please call the magnet office at 561-694-7388 and we will try to help you.
Q: Can I accept a position at one school and remain on the waitlist for another?
A: No
Q: We are not zoned for PBGHS. Is there a bus that will pick up my student?
A: Please see http://www.palmbeachschools.org/transportation/
Q: Will my student have transportation if she stays for after-school activities?
A: Activity buses are extremely limited. Students not zoned for PBGHS will find activity buses very limited, if at all.
Q: I have a student attending PBGHS. Does that mean that my younger student automatically gets in?
A: No. Siblings are prioritized, but they are a lower priority than students on the Principal’s 20% list and students in priority SAC areas, if the school has priority SACs (PBGHS does not). Additionally, if the student is out-of-boundaries for PBGHS and the cap on out-of-boundaries students has been reached, a sibling may be denied a seat in the magnet.
Q: What courses do you use to calculate a student’s GPA for eligibility?
A: The student’s 4th quarter of 7th grade is averaged with the 1st and 2nd quarter of 8th grade. All courses—not just core—are averaged. If a student is applying for 10th grade, the 4th quarter of 8th grade is figured with the first semester of 9th grade.
